  • What is an HDMI Extender over Cat5/6?

A High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) extender acts as a booster for an audio/video HDMI signal – utilising either Category 5 (Cat5) cabling or Category 6 (Cat6) cabling, it effectively extends the range that full 1080p high-definition signals can travel uninterrupted between an HDMI-capable device and an HDMI-capable monitor. A sender module from the extender transmits the HDMI data from the source device over network cabling to a receiver module, which then processes the data and outputs it to a display. This results in flicker-free, crystal-clear imaging over long distances without any artificial noise or loss in signal quality. HDMI extenders are fully capable of transmitting the entire range of HDTV resolutions including: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) compatibility means your data is protected from being copied or intercepted while travelling over Cat5 or Cat6 between your source device and your display monitor.

Cat5 is an older type of network cabling, originally designed to support a wide range of data transfer speeds – from a minimum of 10 Megabits per second through to a theoretical maximum of 100 Megabits per second at bandwidths of up to 100 MHz. Achieving Gigabit speeds is possible on particularly short Cat5 network cabling – however, maintaining these speeds is largely inconsistent. Difficult to find in store these days due to their age, they are often provided alongside older networking devices such as routers and switches, and are capable of only one-way communication – either sending or receiving data.

Released a few years after Cat5, Cat6 network cabling offers a massive 10 Gigabit data transfer increase over its predecessor, at bandwidths of up to 250 MHz. However, past distances of 164 feet, the Cat6's maximum transfer rate reverts back to the Cat5's. Irrespective of speed and distance, the Cat6 possesses a tighter twist in its cabling, resulting in two-way communication capabilities – both sending and receiving data signals – on each wiring pair.
