One of the biggest benefits of HDMI cables lies in their simplicity: setting up an HDMI based home entertainment system couldn’t be easier – just plug and play. As today’s industry standard interface, HDMI offers high quality audio and video signals between a huge variety of source devices and display monitors across a vast array of manufacturers. The number of HDMI cables required – in addition to their length and type – is dependent on two key factors: the sophistication of your home theatre system, as well as the distance between each of its components.

One of the most common methods with which to configure your home entertainment system is to connect all your source devices – that is, desktop computers, laptops, and PlayStations – to a single HDMI capable display monitor such as a Plasma screen or LCD TV. This way, you can effectively have all your audio and video outputting devices directly plugged into the one screen through a few HDMI cables. Some advanced or high end TVs even offer increased convenience thanks to HDMI interconnectivity between devices: this enables you to switch between each of your connected HDMI devices on the fly with your TV’s remote control. For a basic home theatre system, connecting your source devices directly to your TV is the simplest and most efficient viewing and configuration option.

However, Video Graphics Array (VGA) cables do offer a viable alternative to HDMI cables – especially when it comes to older source devices and display monitors that do no support HDMI. Budget models, entry level products, and antiquated hardware should all possess VGA functionality – the industry standard of its time. Importantly, VGA cables only transmit an analogue based video signal: an additional 3.5mm audio lead is required in order to output audio signals from your computer tower through to your TV screen.
